We measured count rates and air dose rates at 11 measurement points where the influence of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident could be ignored to obtain parameters for a background equation applying to KURAMA-II loaded with the high sensitivity CsI(Tl) detector, C12137-01. It was found that the sensitivity of KURAMA-II (C12137-01) was about 10 times or more for background measurement, compared with KURAMA-II loaded with the standard type CsI(Tl) detector, C12137. A background equation for the energy range of 1400-2000 keV was determined as, y (Sv/h)=0.062 x (cps). We evaluated background air dose rates using KURAMA-II (C12137-01) for 71 municipalities and compared them with the previous study using KURAMA-II (C12137). Evaluated background air dose rates in this study were almost equal to those in the previous study. We confirmed that the background equation evaluated in this study was applicable for the KURAMA-II (C12137-01).

Coincidence - data were collected for the first time and a more precise half-life value of T = 1.27(6) s was measured. A new -decay scheme was deduced based on the fine-structure of the decay. The results lead to a preferred spin and parity assignment of J = (3) for the ground state of At; however, J = (2) cannot be fully excluded.

It was, however, quite difficult to measure it. We measured the energy spectrum of spallation neutron at 180 degrees at the proton transport beam line (3NBT) to MLF (Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility) on J-PARC by the NE213 liquid scintillator. The irradiated proton energy was 3 GeV, and the intensity was 110 protons above. The neutron energy was determined by Time-Of-Flight method with n-gamma discrimination. We also simulated the energy spectrum by using PHITS code and compared with measured spectrum. In this paper, the overview of the experiment and the results are described.

Toroidal Field (TF) coils of fusion DEMO plant at JAERI are required to generate magnetic field of 16 to 20 T. To realize this high field, advanced superconducting materials, such as NbAl and high temperature superconductor (HTS), are considered. HTS has enough performance in a 20-T field at 4 K, and a forced-cooled type HTS conductor using a silver alloy sheathed Bi-2212 round wire has been proposed. Required areas of superconductor, structure, stabilizer, coolant and insulator in the cross section of coil winding have been calculated. However, there are many technical issues to be solved, such as accurate temperature control during heat treatment in an atmosphere of oxygen. On the other hand, a large coil using NbAl has been developed by JAERI, and major technology to fabricate a 16-T NbAl coil was developed. Validity and issues of grading the winding area are discussed, and there is a possibility to increase a field up to around 17 T using the method.

The response functions of a BC501A liquid organic scintillator have been measured for incidence of various charged particles to investigate the relationship between the kinetic energy of the charged particles and the light output of BC501A. The experiment was performed at Heavy-Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) utilizing spallation reactions by heavy ion bombardment on a graphite target. Charged particles incidental on BC501A were identified with the two-dimensional scatter plot of the time-of-flight and the light output. The light output of the BC501A scintillator was deduced as a function of the kinetic energy of the charged particles, and was compared with the semi-empirical formula. While the experimental data showed a good agreement with the formula for proton and deuteron, the data gave slightly larger values compared with the systematic trend for alpha particle.

This report gives a detailed description of the theory and computational algorithms of modernized coupled-channels optical model code OPTMAN based on the soft-rotator model for the collective nuclear structure and excitations. This work was performed under the Project Agreement B-521 with the International Science and Technology Center (Moscow), financing party of which is Japan. As a result of this work, the computational method of OPTMAN was totally updated, and an user-friendly interface was attached.

A sediment trap experiment and sediment coring were carried out in the northwestern Japan Sea (Sta MS), and lead-210 (Pb) and major components in settling particles were measured. By drawing up a balance of Pb in the water column, it was estimated that the cycle of Pb in the Sta MS was controlled by 3 processes, (1) removal and vertical transport of Pb from the surface layer by settling particles, (2) decomposition of particles in the deep layer, and (3) export by the deep current. Flux of Pb at 3 km depth was large in winter and spring. The large Pb flux in this season would be caused by the horizontal import of Pb -rich seawater from the coastal region to the bottom layer of Sta MS. It was suggested that seasonal variation of particulate Pb flux at the deep layer in the northwestern Japan Basin indicated the renewal of the deep water in this area.

HTS has a capability to produce a magnetic field of higher than 16 T, which is required in such a fusion power reactor. A trial fabrication of a 10-kA 12-T conductor was started using round Ag-alloy sheathed Bi-2212 strands, which has best performance at 4.2K, 16T at present. The conductor has about 34-mm diameter, and is composed of 729 HTS strands. Operating temperature is designed at not only 4 K but also 20K. The conductor sample is indirectly cooled and is solder-coated on the surface to use specific heat of the lead as much as possible, which at 20 K is almost comparable with specific heat of SHe at 4.5K, 0.6MPa. From the tests of the conductor, the fabrication of large HTS conductor and 10kA operation at 12 T and about 12.5 K were successfully performed and the possibility of HTS to use fusion application was demonstrated.

Times Cited Count:20 Percentile:77.2(Chemistry, Analytical)To evaluate the migration of radionuclides to the ground surface, deposition was collected from 1993 to 2001 with basin set up at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute at Tokai-mura. Monthly basin samples were evaporated to dryness to obtain residual samples.These samples were measured by a well type Ge detector for natural and fallout radionuclide. These monthly depositions showed a clear seasonal variation with peaks in the early spring from February to April, and also in May in some years. The depositions of K and Cs have good correlation with the dry weight of deposited material, the depositions of Be and Pb showed much lower correlation coefficients. This difference in the correlation coefficient between these two groups of radionuclides can be attributed to the difference in the originating processes. These features in the concentration are thought to be caused by the difference in mechanism and location of origination, which would result in difference in the contributing particle size, and hence by the difference in the transport and deposition processes.
